Heartworms are deadly to dogs and
cats. They are transmitted by infected mosquitoes and
they travel in the bloodstream of your pet. Adult heartworms
live inside the animal's heart and large adjacent blood
vessels. Heartworm infestations cause many easily avoidable
deaths each year to family pets of all ages.
Be sure to eliminate
mosquito infestation around your home by eliminating standing water,
emptying all containers that have filled with water including holes
in tree trunks. These are prime breeding grounds for
mosquitoes.
While treatment is
available for infected pets, it is extremely dangerous and can
result in the death of the pet being treated. The best way to
avoid a heartworm infestation is prevention. Consult your
veterinarian for the best ways of treating and preventing heartworm
infestation in your pet including yearly testing.
